Printing for Artists

We are pleased to offer printing services tailored to the needs of artists. In producing prints of Ona’s work we have built up the resources and expertise necessary to produce fine art prints of the highest quality on a variety of media. If you have used a large printing company and been disappointed with the results you may find our service refreshingly different. You will be involved with every step in the decision making process, from color matching to choosing the final crop.

The Process

The first step is to send a high quality digital image of your work. You may wish to use the services of a professional photographer or digital scanning service to obtain the highest quality images. With care it is also possible to get very acceptable results with consumer level digital SLR cameras.  The digital images can be put on a CD or DVD and mailed, or you can send the images electronically if you prefer. Please contact me before making or sending your images, particularly if taking your own photographs. I can offer advice that will help produce a better final result.

Next is the color matching process. One or more test strips are made covering the key colors in the image using a color accurate proofing paper. These are mailed to you for inspection. We may be close, or we may have work to do. If any of the colors are significantly off, the best way forward is for you to prepare a small color sample that matches the color in the original, and mark the location of that color on the test strip. If there are multiple colors that need adjusting make sure to number the samples and the test strip locations! Then return both the test strip and the color samples. I’ll make the necessary corrections and send you another set of test strips. The color matching process is open-ended (within reason), the objective is to produce prints that you are happy with.

Once you are happy with the color match another set of test strips is made for final approval using the media that will be used for your prints. This allows you to see how the finished prints will look before committing to the cost of prints.

Finally, you can order whatever sizes of prints you wish. There are no minimum orders, and your color corrected digital files will be kept so that any future orders can be processed quickly. (You can request the files be deleted at any time if you wish.) The prints will be carefully packed and you’ll be given a choice of shipping speeds/costs.

Media

IMG_0928-2We use the highest quality papers, canvas and inks to produce our prints. The color and feel is exceptional, and the manufacturers quote print fade times of 200 years and more!

We offer a choice of Somerset Velvet, Arches Aquarelle rag, and a heavyweight (430g/m2) professional canvas. After printing the canvas is treated with two layers of UV blocking varnish to ensure that it is robust enough to be mounted on stretcher bars. Each of these media are acid free and archival quality. Somerset Velvet has a soft even texture with excellent colour and fine reproduction of detail. Arches Aquarelle rag has a more traditional water colour paper texture. It is probably the highest quality fine art paper currently available on the market (and unfortunately is priced to reflect that).

If you are interested in a different media let me know - I’m always interested in new challenges!

Client Feedback

The prints in the photograph above were done for Donna Pierce-Clark who kindly allowed me to quote her response below:

“Yes, they were not only safe, but absolutely gorgeous!!!!!

I love the packaging for the cards in the clear boxes. Very nice!

The canvas pieces are in my opinion "better" than the original.  They sparkle and the colors, etc. are right on!

You are wonderful to do business with.  I hope (if you are interested) that I can promote your business as I sell these.  I have a feeling things are going to start flying off the shelves and you and I and Ona are going to be really, really busy!”

Prices

This is a new service and we’re still assessing the costs. In the interim we have based these ‘special introductory prices’ loosely on those from typical large printing companies. Some standard sizes are listed below, but remember, this is a custom printing service - you can have whatever you want!

The initial color matching fee becomes payable when you order your first print of that image, if you decide not to order it’s my loss, not yours!
