The Night Before Christmas

Christmas Eve is a time full of magic and wonder for everyone but especially for young children. The twinkling lights and shiny baubles which glow, sparkle and shimmer have this baby entranced.

The First Taste of Winter

Young children put nearly everything in their mouth and in this painting the young girl is experiencing her first taste of snow. I wanted to capture that feeling of a cold day contrasting against the warm cuddly soft clothes and also that sense of uncertainty in the child's eyes as she put the cold snow to her mouth.

Ribbons and Bows

When you have a very young child in the family, the temptation to shower them with gifts at Christmas is enormous but when Christmas arrives you discover that what interests them most is the colourful wrapping paper and bows.

‘Santa’s Little Helper’ depicts a mischievous black Labrador who is desperate to greet his owner with his latest find, but is he really supposed to have it?

‘Summer Romance’ The Palladium Bridge at Wilton House, Wiltshire in England.

‘In an English Country Garden’ This well known national Trust Garden in Kent is one of the most visited in the United Kingdom. Sissinghurst gardens was created in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West, poet and gardening writer, and her husband Harold Nicholson, author and diplomat.

As you look at this painting from the edge of an old wooden bridge there is a symbolic parallel. Do you stay on this side of the bridge merely wondering at what the warm sunlight feels like as it filters through the golden leaf canopy? Do you wait before exploring and possibly miss the moment or do you live life to the full, cross the bridge and experience it for yourself and maybe even discover what lays beyond?

Imagine walking alongside one of the many lakes in Ontario of an evening after a stressful day and then seeing the chair on the jetty facing out onto the lake, tempting you to just sit and relax and watch the beautiful colors of the aurora and their reflections in the water as they dance and swirl around.

‘Into the Mist’ captures the tranquility of kayaking early in the morning. The only sounds that can be heard apart from the call of the loons are the paddles as they move through the otherwise still water.

‘Alpine Meadows’ brings to life a scene high in the Alps. You can almost imagine the sounds of cow bells carried by the breeze and the smell of the fresh mountain air.

‘After the Storm’ was inspired by a quote by Byron: “The evening beam that smiles the clouds away, tints tomorrow with prophetic ray”

'Country Reflections' captures an idyllic scene overlooking Beaulieu Palace in Hampshire England. Beside the Beaulieu river is an ideal place to sit, relax and soak up the English sunshine.

‘Follow your Dream’ captures the moment when one of the kings of the sky, the Bald Eagle soars silently and effortlessly through the spectacular scenery of the Rocky mountains of Canada. Following his dream the glider pilot seeks inspiration from this magnificent creature.

You don't need to go far to find something totally absorbing... just step into the garden first thing in the morning or after a shower of rain and look closely at all the minute water droplets resting on and hanging off the stems leaves and petals. Each droplet resting on the leaves acts as a miniature magnifying glass and tiny little upside down gardens can be seen within each drop that hangs.

Most of us have probably seen a wet dog shaking off water, but how many of us have really seen the amazing beauty of this action? Have you stopped to notice that the dog shake begins at the head and gravitates through the body? Probably, like me, you’re too busy hiding behind a towel or it happens so quickly that you miss it, but if you watch closely as the fur flies and the water droplets and spray fly off they create amazing circles of moisture. I wanted to stop time at this moment and capture this amazing sight in a painting so I could view this sight without getting wet!

‘The Butterfly Effect’ is dedicated to the many people who take the time to think of others when they are in need of support.

'Metamorphosis' appears on first glance to be an eye with an image of the ASL sign for isolation in its pupil. However, as you look closer many other hands can be seen.

‘First Touch’ conveys the joy and gentleness of the long awaited first physical contact with a mother’s newborn child.

‘To Have and to Hold’ captures the joining of husband and wife in marriage.

‘A World in Her Hands’ depicts a baby girl who is curiously exploring how her hands and fingers can move and how she can use them to interact with her environment.

‘Look Mum.. No Hands!’.  Those of you that have ever had a child will know too well how nothing ever fits for long when a baby is young.

‘Buddies’. Those of you that have ever lived with a dog will understand how special the friendship can be between us and them. Love is unconditional, and the touch of your special Buddy can heal many wounds and brighten up even the darkest of days.

‘Freedom’ depicts a snow leopard who is unconcerned by the cold harsh conditions in which it lives and is leaping with a sense of freedom into the unknown, ready to face any challenge ahead.

'Bear..ly Moving' depicts a bear who is taking things easy. He has caught scent of something but is just too comfortable to move anything other than his nose.

‘All Played Out’ depicts a kitten who, after a busy day’s exploration, is unable to keep his eyes open any longer and who is settling down for another less tiring adventure in dreamland.

‘I Walk Alone’ depicts a cat who does not wish to be followed. He is an independent spirit who likes to do things on his own terms.

The bond between boy and dog is a very special one. Being a typical Labrador though, this dog is also extremely food orientated.

Cry me a River

A painting of emotions; sadness, loneliness, hurt deep inside, the broken glass with jagged edges, the peeling paint, the derelict buildings. The haunting reflection of the viewer looking out onto the derelict scene, almost seeming to cry tears of sorrow into the river as the storm clouds weigh heavily on top of her.

Cleansing of the Soul

This watercolor painting is one of a group of thought provoking compositions centered on the theme of the eye. I was fascinated by the idea that if you looked at an eye from an unusual angle you could imagine that the pupil was a pool of water.

Edge of Extinction

Lemurs are found only on the island of Madagascar off the southeast coast of Africa. Over half of lemur species range in classification from critically endangered to vulnerable because of habitat loss due to deforestation.

Masquerade

This Venetian style Harlequin mask symbolizes fun, laughter and merriment but the eyes peering through the mask and looking off into the distance tell a different story.

Blurred Vision

Looking down into a glass of wine from directly above I was fascinated by how it blurred and distorted the images of whatever lay at the base of the glass.

In this painting the child is looking into a bubble with dreamy eyes. To her this is not just an ordinary bubble but an amazingly magical one! In her imagination there is a whole little world inside this one bubble. In this world, all of the zebras are rainbow colored!

However much you want or are forced to hide in the shadows, the eye can reveal your true feelings. It is the 'window to the soul'.

Children are so curious and I love how they always want to know what is on the other side of any barrier. This one is peeping through a hole in a fence. Can you tell from his eyes which side of the fence he would rather be? Or even what he wishes he could have or do? It's a shame that sometimes a wish cannot come true, but sometimes it can....

The student in this painting has just been woken up, maybe by the alarm clock or maybe by some other noise. As she looks at the time she realizes that she hasn't got long before her days lecture!! Look closely and you will see her eye really is ON the time.

‘Isolation’ depicts a face hiding behind a tattered and torn barrier which may be invisible to the rest of the world but feels real to the woman behind it.

‘Crying the Blues’ is a surrealistic interpretation of feelings encountered when crying.

‘Watching’ depicts the eye of a woman who is watching intently but what exactly is she looking at?

‘Uncracked Shell’ depicts a woman who outwardly appears strong and cold but she is partially covering her eyes behind her hair as if there is something to hide. What feelings  are beneath this outer shell?

‘Lost’ depicts a girl who appears drained of emotion for reasons that she cannot express. Outwardly she is disheveled and empty but if you look into her eyes they tell a different story.
